The Rack and Pinion

The faster you go the more important it becomes to be able to control your FRS or BRZ. The steering rack and pinion that connects your steering wheel and your front wheels are held in place by some rubber bushings. Rubber is a great material for absorbing vibration but the more it flexes the weaker it becomes and those original bushings can begin to lose their shape. When this happens the gear teeth of the rack and the pinion don't always line up and this can cause problems for your steering.

Danger of Worn Bushings

On the mild end of the spectrum, worn rubber rack and pinion bushings can cause popping or clunking noises but the worst-case scenario is loose steering or steering wander. If you crest a hill at 75mph on Texas Hwy 377 between Granbury and Stephenville and immediately have to avoid a salt water tanker making a left-hand turn, then loose steering could be disastrous. Knowing that your steering will respond correctly is something that most people don't think about until it's a necessity.

The Durable Solution

The answer to this potential problem is using a stronger material than rubber, but if it's too strong then the amount of vibration in the steering wheel makes the ride uncomfortable. Enter Prothane's polyurethane rack and pinion bushings. Polyurethane has the durability that rubber lacks and is still soft enough to absorb a good amount of vibration between the road and your steering wheel. As a bonus, polyurethane will also brush off the elements that can degrade rubber like heat, oil, and road salt. So you exchange some noise and vibration dampening for durability and longevity. These polyurethane bushings are backed up by Prothane's lifetime warranty which we handle in-house here at DST.
